How Experts View Israel’s Earthquake Preparedness


Many seismological experts predict a major earthquake is not far off chas v’sholom based on passed earthquakes and geological shifts that are monitored in Israel and the region. The IDF Homefront Command works with other agencies to prepare the homefront for any and every eventuality, and earthquakes remain high on the preparedness agenda.

“Turning Point 17” is about to begin, the four-day exercise that involves the IDF and other emergency agencies; beginning on Sunday 17 Sivan to Wednesday or Thursday. Other agencies involved include but not limited to (random order) Israel Fire, Magen David Adom, Zaka, Israel Police, and the National Emergency Administration.

In a worrisome prediction, experts report in a massive earthquake; up to 3,000 people would be killed, 3,800 injured, 4,200 trapped and 80,000 displaced R”L. In addition, 7,300 buildings would sustain major damage while an additional 27,000 would sustain less severe damage.

The 1927 earthquake in Yericho was measured at 6.2 on the Richter scale. Yericho and Yerushalayim sustained major damage and 287 people were killed.
