Calling to dissolve the government, UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday, 22 Nissan, announced new elections should be held no later than June 8, 2017. Hence, she has curtailed the life of the government that was first elected to serve under former PM Cameron.
The current government was elected in 2015 and was to serve a five-year term. May held a press conference to make her formal announcement, citing the implementation of Brexit and its conditions as the reason for her decision to return to the voters.
She told her nation “The country is coming together, but Westminster is not. In recent weeks Labor has threatened to vote against the deal we reach with the European Union.
“The Liberal Democrats have said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill. The Scottish National party say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain’s membership of the European Union…”
May stated she believes elections is the only way to end the current political standoff.
