IDF Kitchens Preparing For The Pesach Mission

Final preparations are underway to prepare IDF kitchens for Pesach ahead of the upcoming Yomtov. The military’s food distribution network is preparing for the major undertaking, to deliver the Pesach food to kitchens and bases around the country to permit food preparations for Yomtov.

The IDF reports that it has ordered 61.5 tons of matzos, 8.5 tons of fish, 52 tons of meat and poultry, 115,000 schnitzels, a ton of horseradish, two tons charoses, two tons of artichokes, and 8.5 tons of cakes and cookies to meet the needs of soldiers and officers serving around the country.

The military also purchased 7.5 tons of matza meal, 4 tons of potatoes, 120,000 Pesach rolls, and 2.7 tons of mix to make matza meal dumplings.

For soldiers who will be in isolated security positions on seder night and not on a base, the IDF Rabbinate is distributing 5,000 seder kits which include everything a soldier requires to make his own seder.

This marks the first Pesach the military will address the needs of vegans and soldiers with gluten-free diets with special meals for Yomtov. They will receive special meals [that contain kitnios] under the hashgacha of the IDF Rabbinate.

This is also the first time the IDF will be using Pesach rolls, that resemble bread for Shabbos.

  1. Re: soldiers in isolated security outposts – I have a friend who spent the Seder night waiting in an ambush for a terrorist, and was therefore not going to be able to eat regular Matza due to the crackling noise eating it would make. The IDF Rabbanut’s solution? They sent several pre-packaged K’zeytim of Matza meal so that he could at least be m’kayem the d’oreisa of eating Matza on the first night of Pesach!

The IDF is far from perfect, but kudos to the dedicated Rabbanim who do their best to ensure adherence to Halacha while serving.

  2. I would endorse the comments made above by anIsraeliYid (No.1)….the IDF has a virtually impossible mission to keep the medninah safe within the umbrella of a Jewish state with chayalim from all segments of society from totally secular to the most frum within the Chareidi tzibur. No other Army in the world has to balance all the constraints on their operations as the IDF but they do it with elegance and efficiency, notwithstanding the efforts of some misguided politicians and rabbunim to undermine their success. May all the brave men and women of the IDF have a kosher and zissen pesach and keep us safe.

  3. Also, a special yasher koach to the individual IDF chayalim and their rabbunim who ultimately are the ones who are the real heros. While placing their lives on the line in fighting the terrorists, they now also have to confront a new form of “domestic terrorism” when they return home from the front lines and are verbally and physically assaulted by those whose lives they protect. We should be thinking of them and their mesiras nefesh on our behalf during our davening next week.

  4. But anyway, Gadolhadorah, I am glad that you at least like the IDF. A nice change for you, from always hating everthing and everyone. Even if this love only comes because IDF stands in opposition to the Torah world, love by itself can remedy your hateful soul.

  5. To Ephraim:

An a kosher and ziseen pesach for you as well.

P.S.The “hate” you reference is actually a contrarian sinas chinam for those who distort yiddeshkeit to intimidate, subordinate and abuse those who don’t accept their hashkafah.
