Gafne And Deri Blast The Peleg Faction For ‘Trampling Degel’s Hashkafa’

The ongoing protests by the Peleg faction is without a doubt having an impact on the entire chareidi community as a growing number of Israelis view all the chareidim responsible for the unprecedented violence and law-breaking seen by Peleg protestors in recent weeks.

Interior Minister (Shas) Aryeh Deri and MK (Yahadut Hatorah) Moshe Gafne on Sunday evening attacked the Peleg Yerushalmi faction for the protests as they took part in a panel discussion hosted by the Yad al HaLev NGO. The event was emceed by chareidi radio host Avi Mimran.

Gafne questioned “do we worry only about ourselves or are we compelled to concern ourselves with everyone”, adding “Rav Shach ZT”L would speak about Allenby Street in Tel Aviv, not just Rabbi Akiva Street in Bnei Brak as well as speaking about Yaffo Street in Jerusalem and not just about Geula. He always spoke to the entire tzibur as did Rav Elyashiv ZT”L and Rav Shteinman Shlita. They collect money for yeshivos for baalei teshuva, not for our children”.

He added “They take the Degel hashkafa and trample it under the feet of 15-years-old bochrim on Jabotinsky Street. Who will give the din for these actions?”

Gafne also addressed a letter he sent to Yated Neeman decades ago when he still lived in Ofakim, a letter being used now by the Peleg faction to show that today, he supports protests. He added “I know who stands behind the recordings and pashkavilim in this matter, a person who himself opposes the hafganos. To take an isolated incident in which I, as an avreich came out and protested alone? We are concerned with the entire tzibur and not just Yavne and its chachamim, as we are taught to do by Gedolei Hador. This very same individual was always against hafganos as Rav Shach said, Gedolei Hador never instructed us to use hafganos. They have 15 and 16-year-old children confronting police”.

Deri added “Everything Gafne said is clear and its most unfortunate that it must be repeated. The truth is superfluous. It is so simply and clear that what happened is 60 years of vision of Gedolei Yisrael stood before us and each year conditions became more difficult than today in terms of tznius.

“I do not want to make a mistake. There is no doubt that our rabbonim, those who passed on and those living today, who do not subscribe to their derech are teaching us as Gafne said, clear as day. There is not a single bochur yeshiva who hears and does not do what he should and not a single hair falls from his head.

“All the problems stem from not listening and not going to the induction center [to register as the Degel faction talmidim do]. When the IDF apprehends one of them, intentionally or not, then he sits in jail. Does anyone know or understand what goes through the head of a true ben Torah sitting in jail with 50 people inside with him? Shabbos with televisions Hashem Yerachem! What happens to such a bochur’s neshama? How with this impact him when he leaves there?”

  1. Gafne, Deri and all critics, where’s your ahavas yisroel? Instead of criticizing, how about joining the protests in order to stop drafting Yeshiva boys once and for all, especially those who are sitting and learning, and especially from those yeshivos who are not govt funded.

  2. #2 Their Ahavas Yisroel is exactly where Gdolei ha dor Rav Shteinman shlita and Rav Kanievsky Shlita say it should be.

  3. People will blame Chareidi society – and perhaps rightly so – until Rabbonim and respected Talmidei Chachamim protest the actions of Peleg. Protests by politicians mean basically nothing in a society that adheres to Daas Torah.

  4. While I find the behavior of the Peleg repugnant, whats even more bizarre is Deri giving musar to anyone about anything….this is the same ex-felon who mocked the memory of his own Rav by making a video of himself using an onion to bring forth phony tears at Rav Ovadia’s shiva.

  5. Can someone explain how Gafni answered the questions posed by the Peleg? Gafni himself wrote a letter in where he states clearly that all that there is in shabbos observance today in Israel is because of the demonstrations that were done by the chareidi community and that what we have in yiddishkeit today in Israel is largely due to the demonstrations of the chareidy community. How does Gafni answer that? How can he say now that Gedolei Yisrael never told us to do Hafganos when it is clear from his letter the opposite and besides what about the letters written over the years by Rav Shach the Steipler and Rav Elyashiv in favour of hafganos if anyone can explain it would be greatly appreciated (maybe it’s a misquote and Gafni was just saying that now he doesn’t hold of the hafganos going on now or that things have changed and now the gedolim who held of hafganos would not hold that anymore).

  6. Can anyone explain Aryeh Deri. 1.He seems to feel that it makes no sense to not go to the enlistment office because it’s better than it ever was, if so why is it that in the letter signed by the moetzes of agudah, degel and SHAS just 2 years ago, they say clearly that they are considering not allowing anyone to go to the enlistment office (even if they did not end up paskening that way, obviously there is sound logic to doing so and according to what Deri says it seems that what they were thinking of doing makes no sense) if all the Gedolim were considering to forbid going to the enlistment office and some of them ended up saying not to go, where does he come to say that it makes no sense.
    2. As to what he said that no Bochur was ever hurt by going to the enlistment office; just a few days ago Rav Moshe Tzadkah Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Porat Yoseph and one of the foremost sphardi gedolim (excepted by shas followers too) wrote a letter where he talks about many many bochurim who got messed over by going to the enlistment office, Rav Tzadkah was joined by tens of other sphardi rabbonim as well as tens of Ashkenasi rabbonim. If anyone can explain please do.

  7. NON BIASED: Demos of the past were not demos of today. The demonstrations in Petach Tikveh against movie theaters on shabbs did not include blocking intersections, stopping traffic, inconveniencing hundreds or thousands of people, destroying Egged buses and police cars, etc. These actions were UNHEARD of during demos of the past, peaceful demonstrations were encouraged by our past zt”l Gedolim.

Regarding names of bochuring effected by applying for an exemption, give us proof of names, behavior and consequences & what “messed over”. There are young men who are not in Yeshiva who have had issues in obtaining an exemption and have had the choice of national service, or a shortened army service.

1.I don’t know where you get your information from, but you can ask anyone who was around by the demonstrations in Petach tikva against the theater and all over Israel against ‘nituchei meisim’ and many other demonstrations and they will tell you that there was a lot of violence, blocking of roads, inconveniencing of scores of people injuries and more. In the Teshuva I quoted by Rav Elyashiv (printed in קובץ תשובות חלק א’ סימן מ”ד) he writes to a Rav in Petach Tikva who wrote to him that he feels that the demonstrations should be stopped because of the VIOLENCE which they have caused, the HATRED that flares up between Jews due to them and the lack of any good coming out from them, (SOUNDS FAMILIAR?) and Rav Elyashiv responds imploring him to take back his opposition to the demonstrations and to take part in leading them himself. I heard myself from a participant of the hafganos against ‘nituchei meisim’ that were held in the city of Yafo and were with the endorsement and PARTICIPATION of MARAN HARAV AHARON YEHUDAH LEIB SHTEINMAN SHLIT”A, (I can send you pictures) about the tremendous violence that went on at those demonstrations. To say that this was unheard of is simply a mistake.
    2. You ask to bring proof of names of Bochurim who were messed over, I’m not involved and therefore I obviously don’t have names of Bochurim I just quoted the letters of Gedolei Yisroel who do know themselves ( and they talk about Bochurim who are in Yeshiva) personally I think they can be trusted more than politicians.
3.You ask what does ‘messed over’ mean and you seem to be implying (please correct me if I misunderstood) that there being drafted into the army is not such a problem in it of itself, especially if they are not learning. I understand this may be your take on the matter but the opinion of the Gedolei Hador is different I quote the words of Rav Ovadia Yosef in a letter written in 2001 הננו להזהיר באזהרה חמורה לבל יתפתה שום תלמיד ושום שומר תורה ומצוות ליפול ברשת הצבא גם אם אינו במסגרת לימודים.
It is clear that there are many Gedolei Hador who feel that we are in the process of a Gezeiras Shmad, which is a lot more serious than a theater opening up on shabbos or “nituchei meisim”.
