High Court: Prisoners Need Books!

Israel’s High Court of Justice issued a ruling that prisoners require more than one book. The court instructed the head of Israel’s Prison Authority to permit inmates to take out multiple books. The court’s ruling comes in response to the petition filed by inmates two years ago from Tirtza Women’s Prison.

Attorney Lila Margalit feels the one book limit is a “Gross violation of a prisoner’s basic rights”.

  1. Quite right indeed. What do you want people to do in prison – stare at the walls? Sleep for 22 hours per day?

Reading books is generally considered a positive thing. Allowing people to only have 1 book at a time sounds harsh indeed.

I assume YWN posted this because they support ‘stricter’ / ‘harsher’ prison regimes. I cannot think of any other reason why YWN would publish this.

Your logic is completely wrong. Give some suggestions – what would YOU want prisoners to spend their time on?
