There is a saying “Seeing is believing” and it appears for popular radio host Razi Barkai, this is indeed the case. The Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) host was one of a number of members of the press who took part in a tour of Shomron, visiting communities and getting a real picture of day-to-day life in yishuvim, meeting with residents and learning who they really are. The getting acquainted tour was sponsored by area officials in the hope that when people are provided with an opportunity to see real life in the area, they will understand the true nature of the settlement movement and its residents.
After the day’s event a number of the members of the press had warm words for the settlers. For most of the visitors, this was a first opportunity to meet and speak with area residents, permitting them to dispel the harsh stereotype depicted in the media.
“I came to listen and see and I found people who are simply marvelous, modest and always willing to assist their neighbors” stated Barkai.
“Even if I believe the settlements are problematic vis-à-vis the future of the country, this type of visit is essential towards getting to know the people.
Yael Dan, also from Galei Tzahal, admitted she was “fascinated” by what she saw “but I emerge with a difficult feeling because the settlements today are close to undoable and perhaps there really is no solution as the settlers claim”.
She added that while she personally does not identify with the religious side of life in the area, she was quite impressed with the caliber of the people and the attachment to the history and the land, determined to continue in this path.
