Israel’s Ambassador To Cairo Returns

Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Yitzchak Levanon returned to Cairo for a first time since violence erupted in that country in September 2011, despite renewed violence in Cairo over recent days.

Foreign Ministry officials explain the ambassador’s return is brief, for a number of days, to permit him to officially conclude matters left unfinished when the embassy was evacuated in September. The ministry has announced that a new ambassador would be assigned since Levanon has completed his term and is in line for a new position.

According to a Ynet report, the ambassador returned via a Turkish airline traveling to Istanbul rather than a direct flight to Egypt.

Newly-appointed ambassador, Yaakov Amitai, is expected to present his credentials in Cairo in December of this year but with increasing violence in that country over the opposition to the new military regime, that schedule may change due to security considerations. In weekend violence, regional media reports state at least one person was killed and over 700 injured.
