Tuesday Evening News Briefs From Eretz Yisrael


11 Breslov Chassidim were taken into custody in Ben-Gurion International Airport after they tried boarding planes to Uman with forged passports.

** Inspectors are out doing random checks in the hope of locating bogus honey and removing it from stores shelves. There is a large quantity of so-called honey, manufactured with a combination of brown sugar, glucose and molasses. Therefore, consumers are advised to use honey with a reliable hechsher.

** The IDF District Coordinating Office has approved the transfer of 10 Gaza children to Slovenia for medical treatment. They are ages 5-15. This is part of a Slovenian government project and the eighth time that children from Gaza are being transported to that country for medical care.

** The southern district has moved to a heightened security alert status ahead of Rosh Hashanah. At least 1,500 police and other forces will be deployed in that district.

** Four suspects who allegedly abducted Rabbi Nir Ben-Artzi were indicted on Tuesday (28 Elul) in a Beersheva court. The indictment states that after the rabbi refused to ‘play ball’ and embezzle funds from a non-profit, he was abducted and held in Tiveria. Eventually, his abductors compelled the rabbi to contact his family and tell them that he has placed himself in exile as a tikun, and that was the reason for his sudden disappearance.

** PA officials reporting that Nigeria has changed its position and will support Palestinian statehood bid.

** Magen David Adom will on erev Rosh Hashanah move to alert level Bet, one level below a state of emergency. Employees and volunteers will be on call around the country, and the alert will continue until motzei Shabbos. MDA officials urge the public not to hesitate to call in the event of a medical emergency.

** Several dozen people took part in a protest outside Tel Aviv City Hall on Tuesday while municipal officials held a pre-Rosh Hashanah event. The protestors expressed their disapproval of the Trachtenberg Committee’s recommendations, calling for true social-economic reforms.

** Turkish officials cooperated with Israel, preventing 97 Ivory Coast residents boarding a flight from Ankara to Israel. The illegals were planning to enter Israel disguised as religious pilgrims. Israel contacted Turkish authorities who agreed to prevent them from boarding the flight.
