Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin and Minister for Regional Development Silvan Shalom were among the movers and shakers on hand for the dedication of the new Kiryat Arba cultural center. Shalom cut the ceremonial ribbon, and Tzvi Katzover, a formal community leader affixed the mezuzah. This was followed by an exhibit by internationally known artist and local resident, Baruch Nachshon.
Local leader Malachi Levinger addressed the event, stating that while there are those who boycott yishuvim, they on the other hand will be more open, providing a forum for those artists who have a different opinion. Levinger boasted the accomplishments of the community in the past four decades, proudly opening the doors of this new center.
Speaker Rivlin in his remarks stated this September may be “Black September”, referring to the imminent vote on Palestinian statehood in the United Nations. He stated that davka during these days, while the PA is trying to enlist international support against Israel; the dedication of the hall carries a special significance. He called the PA’s unilateral move to the UN a “channel to bypass Israel”, adding “We did not return to our Homeland to become an instrument of the nations…”
