Deri: Time to Change The Form Of Government

Former Shas Party leader Aryeh Deri is a proponent of changing the form of government rule in Israel. Speaking at an economic forum he openly expressed his support for such a move. He now feels that we cannot continue attempting to run the country under the current form of rule, pointing out “It is easy to attack the prime minister for being an ineffective leader and s/he may be the most qualified person in this position, but the current system of government does not permit the nation’s leader to function”. He blames this on the abundance of parties, all having to be wooed to remain in the coalition, or at the very least, to support it towards preventing its fall when necessary.

Shas leader Minister Eli Yishai, who also addressed the forum, concurred on many points, highlighting the need to bring some of the control back from the government clerks to the ministers, expressing criticism on how the government’s hands are tied in too many cases due to the current system.

He supports a change in government that would deliver additional authority to the ministerial level and elected officials, and the latter would be held accountable to voters, who will eventually decide if their performance is acceptable.

Deri is working to remain in the spotlight and many political analysts believe he will be a contender in the next prime ministerial race, enjoying support from all walks of Israeli life, both religious and not ,both left and right-wing.

  1. Been a request for years…
There is no representation for residents at all.
Need city councils, representatives that are voted into knesset and some type of statusquo/constitution.

  2. great, this is really what Israel needs, not just a democratically elected leadership, but one that is responsible to its voters instead of their parties.

  3. SHAS and all the religious parties have been fighting AGAINST changing the party system….so it is relieving to hear Deri come out for a more equitable system of representation (since there is none today).
