Tuesday Morning News Briefs From Eretz Yisrael


The Israeli flag that was removed from Israeli Embassy in Cairo during violent protests has been returned to its rightful place, but this time, alongside the Egyptian flag which was not there prior to the protests. (YNET)

** Routes 10 and 12 in the Eilat area remain closed to civilian vehicles in light of credible intelligence community warnings of another planned attack in that area. It should be pointed out the roadway has been closed in the past due to security considerations as well.

** Egyptian security forces have heightened security in Sinai as the Muslim community celebrates Id el-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan. Reports from Egypt state security forces are searching for “jihad cells” in Sinai.

** A deal has been signed between Cellcom and Tzeirei Agudas Chabad that will provide a significant reduction for Chabad cellular telephone users, amounting to tens of percent to hundreds of percent for heavy users. The plan also provides 1,500 monthly Chabad minutes, free talking between members of the new nationwide plan. Cellcom also agreed to up to NIS 1,000 for new subscribers moving over from other cellular providers, to compensate them for costs involved in changing cellular providers. The new plans include packages for kosher and regular mobile phones.

10:45: An Arab motorist ran a checkpoint near Anata. Police pursued the suspect vehicle, firing their weapons, until the suspect was apprehended. No injuries reported. The suspect was taken for interrogation. No additional details.

** Egyptian media reports that tanks and at least 1,500 Egyptian troops are engaged in a major anti-terror operation in Sinai, seeking to prevent terrorist incidents during id el-Fitr. This take place amid mounting Israeli intelligence warnings of an impending attack.

** During a visit this morning to a Sderot factory, Minister of Homefront Security Matan Vilnai confirmed the intelligence community has learned that at least 10 terrorists have left Gaza for Sinai, trying to make their way to Israel to perpetrate another major attack in S. Israel.

** Hamas media: PM Ismail Haniyeh and senior delegation to travel to Cairo this weekend to engage in talks regarding a deal to release Gilad Shalit. 

** The Israel Navy has positioned two missile ships in the Red Sea area in response to mounting terror warnings in S. Israel and ongoing Egyptian anti-terrorist activities in Sinai.
