5Towns Political Action Committee Announces 2010 Endorsements

The following is a press release, and has no connection with YWN whatsoever:

The race that has captured most of the attention for us locally is for the 4th Congressional district. Carolyn McCarthy has all but disappeared from our district. She is rarely seen locally and has been criticized for her passive defense of Israel in the wake of the flotilla incident. Fran Becker started his campaign too late to become well known and raise the necessary funds but has campaigned heavily in the Five Towns and has clearly identified with the issues of our community: taxes, spending, stopping Iran, and protecting Israel. With the GOP poised to take the majority in the House, McCarthy will be reduced to even more irrelevance.

NYS Governor

We had hoped that Carl Paladino would have run a better race. New York has some very large issues to tackle and it would have been beneficial to have a robust discussion of our problems. Unfortunately, the stature and gravitas gap between him and Andrew Cuomo has become immense and we therefore endorse

NYS Comptroller

Tom Dinapoli, when appointed to his current position by the legislature, was called thoroughly and totally unqualified by then Governor Spitzer. While Spitzer was often prone to hyperbole we agree that compared to the qualifaications of Harry Wilson, a self made financier, Dinapoli, who sat in the  Assembly and voted for many years of fiscal extravagance, falls significantly short.

NYS AG

Eric Schneiderman has an impressive background as a public interest lawyer and was a voice for reform in Albany long before the calls became mainstream. However, he has been part of a Senate Democrat conference that has only distinguished itself through incompetence and corruption as was highlighted by the Aqueduct scandal. Dan Donovan has plans to clean up Albany with the steady hand that he has exhibited as Staten Island DA. We need a prosecutor as Attorney General.

US Senate

Senator Charles Schumer is a unique political institution. While we believe that he has moved from the political center towards the left the longer has been in the Senate, he is in a position to become the Majority Leader. That alone is enough to keep him in office. Jay Townsend is barely known by the electorate.

US Senate

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was viewed as weak when appointed by Governor Paterson and has yet to move out of Charles Schumer’s long shadow. It is a surprise to many that a stronger candidate never emerged to challenge her. Joe DioGuardi is one of those weak candidates who last served in Congress more than twenty years ago. He does not make a compelling case for winning the seat.

NYS Senate District 9

Dean Skelos has been a true friend of the Five Towns and the frum community. With Republicans looking like they will be back in the majority of the State Senate, having Dean as Majority Leader makes this choice a no brainer.

NYS Assembly District 20

The contest for the 20th Assembly district presents a  stark political choice. There are few positions more devoid of power than that of Republican Assemblyman in New York. Nevertheless, Harvey Weisenberg, has become so much a a part of Albany dysfunction that he seems not to realize why the public may have a problem with him collecting a salary and a pension for the same job at the same time. His relationship with the Orthodox community has mostly been nonexistent. Josh Wanderer is from our community and seems to understand the changes that are needed in New York State. The question becomes whether the defeat of a long time majority incumbent like Weisenberg will send a message to the Speaker and others in Albany that New Yorkers have had enough of runaway spending and high taxes. We think it might.

The 5Towns Political Action Committee is made up of Democrats and Republicans and was formed by several political activists from the communities of Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Lawrence, and Woodmere. They have dozens of years of professional and volunteer political experience between them. The committee’s goal is to promote community involvement in elections and the entirety of the political process.
