NYC: Gusty Rain Showers Possible Friday Evening Into Saturday Night


Per the National Weather Service:
 
Synopsis:
A strong low pressure system will move into the NYC area Friday night bringing rain and moderate to strong winds through late Saturday evening. This cold front will have an abundance of low level moisture producing widespread heavy rainfall totaling 2.0 to 2.5 inches over the entire period. Periods of heavy rain will result in minor urban flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas…especially where leaves block drains. On Saturday…strong south winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30-35 mph will cause a wind swept rain. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms aloft, which could cause brief periods of strong down directional wind gusts. The front will move east of the region with rain ending late Saturday night.
 
Precipitation:
Approximately 2.0 to 2.5 inches of rain is expected to fall between late Friday evening and late Saturday night. The heaviest period of rain is expected from 2000 hours Saturday to 0200 hours Sunday. Rainfall rates are expected to be below 1 inch per hour for greater than 1 hour.
 
Winds:
Winds on Saturday will be out of the south from 15-25 mph, gusting to 30-35 mph. The heaviest wind period is Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms aloft (high altitude), which could cause brief periods of strong down directional wind gusts. These storms may require the issuance of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, focusing on the wind threat.
 
Urban Flooding:
Urban flooding and nuisance flooding is possible during this event, particularly in low lying and poorly drained areas.
 
Coastal Flooding:
No coastal flooding is expected with this event.
 
NWS Products:
No products have been issued at this time. There is a slight risk of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (focused on the wind threat) or Urban Flood product associated with this event.
