Brooklyn, NY – Councilman Felder was joined on Sunday by family and friends of September 11th victim and lifetime Boro Park resident Thomas Joseph Sgroi for a street naming in his honor. A sign bearing Sgroi’s name was unveiled on the northeast corner of 15th Avenue and 58th Street in Brooklyn, renaming the block “Thomas Joseph Sgroi Way.”
“It is fitting that we honor Thomas Sgroi’s memory by renaming a street in the neighborhood that so shaped his life,” said Felder. “This sign will serve as a reminder to generations to come of Thomas’ life, and his love for and commitment to this neighborhood.”
Raised in Boro Park, Thomas Sgroi loved his neighborhood and remained active in the community all his life. He would often talk of how his upbringing in Boro Park shaped his personality. Thomas’ family has lived in Boro Park since his grandparents emigrated from Europe and most of the neighborhood was still being converted from farm land to residential housing.
Thomas was working at Marsh Technology and Information Services on the 95th Floor of One World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He left behind his wife, two children, Michael and Nicholas, a loving niece and two nephews.

Wasn’t there another Boro Park resident called Mr. Illowitz who was also a victim of the WTC tragedy? He was a very chashuver yid. I don’t know what the criteria is to get a street named after someone, and I don’t even know if it’s a toivah for the neshama, but did anyone think about it?
