3:40PM EST: An American Airlines jet on its way to Toronto is returning to Los Angeles International Airport after apparently blowing a tire on its left main landing gear during takeoff.

The Boeing 737 took off from the airport around 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, said U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

The pilot reported the problem immediately and asked to return to the airport.

The aircraft is circling around the airport to burn fuel. Emergency vehicles are preparing for an emergency landing.
