US Stock Closings 8/20/08


US stocks climbed, led by energy and metals shares, after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicted oil will climb 29 percent through the end of the year and Morgan Stanley advised buying Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.

The S&P500 Index increased 7.85 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,274.54. The advance was limited by 22 percent drops in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on concern they need a government bailout. The Dow average added 68.88, or 0.6 percent, to 11,417.43, and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 4.72, or 0.2 percent, to 2,389.08.
