US Stock Closings 7/31/08


U.S. stocks fell, capping a second monthly drop for the S&P500 Index, after economic growth trailed forecasts, jobless claims rose to a five-year high and Exxon Mobil Corp.’s profit missed analysts’ estimates.

The S&P 500 slid 16.88 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,267.38, leaving the benchmark index down 1 percent in July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 205.67, or 1.8 percent, to 11,378.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 4.17, or 0.2 percent, to 2,325.55.
