New Jersey fire officials hope a state law requiring vendors to sell only self-extinguishing cigarettes will reduce deaths and damage from careless smoking, according to a report in the Record.
The report said all brands sold in New Jersey must now be “fire-safe cigarettes,” which go out when the smoker stops puffing. New Jersey is among 35 states that have passed fire-safe cigarette laws since New York enacted the first one in 2004. The New Jersey law that took effect June 1 promotes fire safety rather than limiting smoking, Assemblyman Herb Conaway Jr., primary sponsor of the measure, told the newspaper.
