The second-in-command of the New York City correction department has resigned amid a probe into his relationship with subordinates.
Samantha Levine, spokeswoman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, told The Associated Press on Sunday that Larry Davis has been replaced as chief of the Department of Correction. Correction Commissioner Dora Schriro announced the appointment of Michael Hourihane to replace the 56-year-old Davis as the department’s top-ranking uniformed officer.
Davis’ resignation comes after months of published reports of possible missteps.
Diane Struzzi, a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Investigation, told the AP an investigation is being conducted into misuse of a department vehicle and Davis’ relationship with correction employees. Davis could not be immediately reached for comment.
The 52-year-old Hourihane has been with the department for 30 years. He takes over the duties of overseeing 8,500 uniformed correction officers at Rikers Island and other New York City jails that house 12,500 inmates.
