NYC: Heavy Rains Flood City Streets, Basements

At least seven inches of rain fell by JFK Airport on Sunday, and all through the city residents dealt with travel delays, dangerous road conditions and even some flooded basements.

Some of the worst-hit areas were on Staten Island. At Amboy Road in Bay Terrace, Department of Environmental Protection crews tried to clear the clogged storm drains.

In one intersection, eight cars were totally submerged and had to be pulled to dry land.

By Sunday afternoon, the immediate danger on Amboy Road had passed and curious onlookers gathered to see when the water might go down.

Drivers were also warned of dangerous conditions on Rockland Avenue, where large rocks and debris fell onto the road.

Residents were angry about what they said was a slow response time from emergency crews, but one worker said he has seen the city make an effort at preventing similar flooding.

DEP officials said that the Sanitation Department would clean up debris left in the street.

In the South Beach section of Staten Island, residents said some of their basements and back streets were covered in stagnant water due to poor drainage.

The heavy rains also flooded many private homes in Queens and slowed down travel times for drivers and mass transit users going through the borough.

Driving to and from the local airports slowed and travelers intending to fly were advised to check with their carriers first.

According to the DEP, there had been across the city by late Sunday more than 300 complaints of sewer backups, 81 complaints of street flooding and 21 complaints of highway flooding.

Consolidated Edison officials also reported power outages in Brooklyn and Queens and expected that all power would be restored by early Monday morning.

To report a power outage in the area, call 1-800-75-CON-ED.

Monday and Tuesday will have possible thunderstorms with temperatures in the 70s. Wednesday and Thursday will be drier and highs in the 80s, followed by chances of thunderstorms and more 80s temperatures on Friday and Saturday.
