British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday that officials had taken bold steps to prevent further rioting and would consult with U.S. police on how to fight gangs.
Some have questioned whether austerity measures by Britain’s Conservative government fanned the flames, Cameron pointed the finger solely at street gangs made up of “young boys, mainly from dysfunctional homes.”
Cameron told Parliament that British police would look to the examples set by U.S. cops in fighting such gangs.
The prime minister specifically mentioned former NYPD chief Bill Bratton who has been rumored as possibly becoming the next head of scandal-plagued Scotland Yard.
Cameron’s address to parliament came as widespread violence appeared to be sputtering out after four days of looting and riots in several cities across the country.
In London, 922 people have been arrested so far, and courts were operating around the clock to process the alleged culprits.
Cameron said the government was “acting decisively” to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
“We will not allow a culture of fear to exist on our streets,” he said. “We will not let a violent few beat us.”
He promised that riot-damaged businesses would receive help in re-opening.
He also said the government would examine whether limits could be put on sites like Twitter and Facebook during times of disorder.
Among the $130 billion in government cuts that have drawn criticism were ones in police budgets that would mean 16,000 fewer cops by 2015.
Cameron argued that the cuts would not affect front-line officers.
The rioting has disrupted sporting events throughout the country and has cast a pall over the 2012 Olympic Summer Games which are to be held in London.

Cameron letting police use tear gas and water canons would be a good start, or is that a little to harsh for your pacifist state?
