The New York State Police arrested the former Troy city clerk in connection with a long term voter fraud scheme. They say the arrest is just one part of an extensive voter fraud crime investigation that is targeting the Democratic party.
William A. McInerney, 47, was arrested as part of an on-going state police investigation into forging absentee ballot applications and then casting the ballots. Police say McInerney was doing this during election cycles for the past four years.
McInerney is charged with 10 felonies. The charges are preliminary and the state police anticipate additional charges to be filed against McInerney.
He was arraigned in Troy City Court and released on his own recognizance. McInerney is a former state Assembly worker who has been a Democratic committeeman in Troy for years.
The unfolding case has rocked the Rensselaer County Democratic Party. The investigation already has resulted in the indictment of Troy Councilman Michael LoPorto and Rensselaer County Board of Elections Commissioner Edward McDonough.
The state police say the investigation into absentee voter ballot fraud is extensive and remains on-going. Troopers say additional arrests are anticipated.
