The newest addition to the New York Police Department’s fleet of patrol vehicles is not built for high-speed chases, but for the stop and go of city traffic.

On Monday the Police Department deployed 10 Chevrolet Volts – a mostly electric vehicle — as part of a pilot program. A spokeswoman for the Police Department, Barbara Chen, said that the department intended to add a total of 25 electric cars to the department’s fleet in the future.

The vehicles are expected to travel 35 to 40 miles on electric power alone before a gas-powered engine kicks in. The Volts will go to the Traffic Enforcement Division and will not be used for traditional patrol, police officials said.

“We have different vehicles for different missions,” said Robert Martinez, the executive director of the Police Department’s Support Services Bureau.

The Police Department’s patrol fleet is varied. Scores of hybrid Ford Fusions and Nissan Altimas are deployed as marked patrol cars, in addition to the Ford Crown Victorias, Chevrolet Impalas and Dodge Chargers that make up the backbone of the fleet.
