Councilman David G. Greenfield is encouraging homeowners who are struggling to stay in their homes to take advantage of a unique opportunity to receive mortgage assistance. The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program, offered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will provide eligible homeowners with assistance that will pay a portion of their mortgages for up to two years or $50,000. The application process is open until July 22, 2011.
“I cannot think of something more important than keeping families in their homes,” said Councilman Greenfield. “Foreclosures hurt the entire community and further destabilize already cash-strapped households. We were all impacted by this recession and there is a long road to a complete economic recovery ahead of us. I am encouraged by this much-needed aid from our federal government and I hope homeowners in need will apply immediately for assistance.”
In order to be eligible for the program, homeowners must be at least 90 days late on their mortgage and unemployed, or working fewer hours, because of the economy or a medical condition.
Councilman Greenfield is working with Brooklyn Housing and Family Services, located at 415 Albemarle Road in Brooklyn, to provide information and pre-applications. Interested homeowners can contact Brooklyn Housing and Family Services directly at 718-435-7585 or call Councilman Greenfield’s office at 718-853-2704 for further instructions. This program will only remain open until July 22, 2011 so Councilman Greenfield encourages homeowners to start the application process as soon as possible.
