NYC: Parks Smoking Ban Reportedly Resulted In One Ticket

The city’s new public smoking ban has not sparked a ticket blitz.

The Wall Street Journal says only one ticket has been issued since the ban on smoking at public parks and beaches took effect on May 23.

A spokesperson for the Parks Department told the paper that ticket was given to a newspaper photographer who had been provoking officials to fine him.

Under the ban, violators face a $50 fine.

The city has said it expects the law to be enforced mostly by New Yorkers themselves, who are urged to ask people they see smoking to stop.

City officials tell the Journal they are currently focused more on informing people about the new law than writing tickets.
