City firefighters will take to the Brooklyn Bridge Friday morning in an effort to save the 20 fire companies on the chopping block.
A thousand firefighters, City Council members and representatives of impacted communities will march across the Brooklyn Bridge and meet thousands more firefighters at City Hall in protest.
Uniformed Firefighter’s Association President Steve Cassidy said the cuts will increase response times, putting many at risk.
“The Bloomberg administration basically says that the time a 911 caller spends with a 911 operator doesn’t count. It’s outrageous,” said Cassidy. “If your house is on fire, if you’re having a heart attack, that minute or minute-and-a-half actually does count. So they’re using deliberately false response times.”
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the $55 million in cuts will not jeopardize public safety.

Bloomberg is out of touch with reality. I am in full support of Steve Cassidy and the members of FDNY. Less fire companies equal longer response times, period!!! They all will travel further and with the staffing cuts of many engine companies down from five to four they will be out of service for longer times when operating at and leaving a fire scene. Every second counts. Just recently Ladder 161 in Coney Island helped saved the life of a man. Ladder 161 is scheduled to be cut… total insanity. Ladder 161 serves an area that has mostly tall buildings where a ladder company is seriously needed…again insanity.
