NYPD Targets Bikes In Ticket Blitz

Summonses for unsafe bicycling are up 48 percent in New York City over last year.

The NYPD has issued nearly 14,000 tickets so far this year for cyclists who fun red lights, ride on sidewalks and bike against traffic.

The New York Post says that’s up from more than 9,000 summonses written during the same period last year.

Manhattan and Brooklyn have the largest number of scofflaw bicyclists. Staten Island had the least, with only 66 tickets issued.

The cycling advocacy group Transportation Alternatives said police should focus on the most dangerous offenses.

  1. As much as I loath the cyclist movement and all the havoc they’re causing the good citizens of NYC and although I’d love to see them ticketed as much as possible, I loath the ticket agents (formally known as “brownies”) way more. The more the City empowers these nasty people with a mission to ticket good citizens, the more impossible it becomes to live in this city.

As you wrote and I quote “As much as I loath the cyclist movement and all the havoc they’re causing the good citizens of NYC and although I’d love to see them ticketed as much as possible.”

The same can be said about drivers of the cars. Why do we have to contend with them they blantly disregard the law as well ie; and this is the biggie not yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk and not looking when pulling out of a parking space for other vehicles and ues bicyclists?

Can you explain this? Yes I also dislike the traffic cops but they should also ticket drivers of cars as well. Don’t you think?

  3. The police also have to realize that the bikers are biking instead of an additional car on the road. So they are really unburdening traffic.
