Mayor Bloomberg joined lawmakers who want to require trucks to have mirrors that would eliminate blind spots – and prevent tragedies like the recent death of a 4-year-old Brooklyn boy.
The bill – endorsed in a Daily News editorial this week – would mandate the installation of so-called crossover mirrors, which allow drivers to see everyone at least 3 feet tall who passes a foot from the truck.
Similar measures have died in Albany in recent years – and Bloomberg said the city can’t wait another day, saying, “We’ve been pushing this law for years and its time has come.”
Moses Englender was riding his tricycle May 12 when he was struck and killed by a delivery truck on Heyward St. The truck’s driver never saw the boy, cop said.
State Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Joan Millman (D-Brooklyn) introduced the mirrors bill in their respective houses and pledged that this time it would pass.
