Bloomberg: If the End of Times Will begin Saturday, Alternate Side Parking Suspended

Mayor Bloomberg, his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, took to the airwaves Friday morning and addressed the highly publicized prophecy that the End of Times will begin Saturday.

“I can just tell you that official policy from the Sanitation Department and the Department of Transportation,” Bloomberg said. “If the world ends tomorrow, alternate side parking will be suspended.”

“Think about it, if the world ends tomorrow it would fix our traffic problems,” Bloomberg told host John Gambling during his weekly WOR radio appearance. “I don’t think you have to worry about returning library books or parking tickets.”

The Mayor revealed that he won’t be within the city limits Saturday, saying that he’ll be giving a speech in Oklahoma when Judgment Day arrives.

“You’re a brave man,” teased Gambling, “considering after the snowstorm, to be out of town when the world ends. You’re going to be criticized in the newspapers.”

But “The world should not end tomorrow,” Bloomberg said. “It can’t end until at least the Knicks win a championship again … so we got a long time.”

  1. Don’t laugh. May 21–Shabbos–at 6:00 p.m., is Shalosh Seudos time, just before LAG B’Omer begins.

And we know that LAG B’Omer heralds a time of Chesed.

The world is in upheavel. Floods, Tornados, Tsunamis, Revolutions. The U.S. is long overdue for a din vecheshbon.

Perhaps, the May 21st’ers have been made privy to something.

As the Talmud states: “Today Nevuah is given to Shoytim.”

  2. @deepthinker Yes, the world IS in an upheavel, with Ishmael – all the nations around Eretz Yisroel – crumbling to pieces. And yes, the weather this week has been abysmal, not to mention the recent earthquakes in New Zealand, Spain, and Japan, as well as the storms of the American South.

And, yes, yesterday our President endorsed the establishment of a HAMAS-Fatah terrorist state in Eretz Yisroel.

And, yes, we are living in the footsteps of Moschiah ben David (may he come speedily in our ideas).

But – no – the world is not “ending” tomorrow at 6 PM.

  3. Halevai something should happen right now. It’s already Shabbos in ארץ ישראל. As for Eliyahu HaNavi coming from above ten t’fachim on Shabbos, it’s entirely possible that he paskins that it’s all right and if it were pikuach nefesh for even one person, t’chum wouldn’t be a major consideration. I would have no problem with Moshiach coming on erev Shabbos either; I’d be absolutely delighted to have to get takeout, under the circumstances. One of their “asmachtas,” l’havdil, is that the mabul started בחדש השני בשבעה עשר יום לחדש, which is tomorrow, but only if you count from ניסן, as opposed to counting from תשרי, especially before מתן תורה, (in which case it could refer to Nov 14 [or last Oct 25], but they think everybody will already be wiped out two-and-a-half weeks earlier, on Simchas Torah of Chu”l, Isru Chag in E”Y). We just have to do our part, with T’filla, T’shuva and Tz’daka (can’t hurt, even if our generation is already בעתה), and leave the determination of the right time for Geula up to הקב”ה, in the spirit of the Rambam’s advice in regards to מחשבי קצים. We can’t jump to conclusions – remember, R Akiva thought that Bar Koziba was Melech haMoshiach, and he might have well been correct, had the generation merited, but unfortunately he never got past the Rambam’s first stage, at most. The most important point to make, though, is that this could all be moot, as from what I’ve heard, there hasn’t been much enforcement of alternate-side parking in NY on Saturdays in recent years. Gut Shabbos.
