House Republicans burst into applause at the passage of their one-week government funding measure Thursday afternoon. The bill, which also funds the military through the end of the fiscal year, makes $12 billion in cuts to domestic social spending.
It stands zero chance of becoming law, having already been rejected by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). President Obama has promised to veto it if it lands on his desk.
Six Republicans opposed the measure; 15 Democrats voted yes.
Earlier Thursday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) sparred on the floor over funding for the military and the rest of the government.

what does congress care if the government gets shut down they will get paid anyway. It is on the backs of the common worker who will lose. Obama and company have no clue on how to run a paper route let alone the US governemnt
1. If the govt shuts down you will hardly even notice. You DON’T need momma govt to hold your hand for you. The govt shuts down all the time & yet we live.
Go ahead and veto it. Go ahead. Dingy Harry and don’t bring it to the floor of the Senate. Maybe now the morons in this country will see its the socialist democrat workers party that is at fault here.
Too bad Congress & the president don’t shut down as well.
You have Cantor as “F-Va.”. Don’t you mean R-VA?
The president won’t sign another CR because he calls it a ‘distraction.’
Well, Mr President, if signing a CR which funds the military for the rest of the fiscal year is a “distraction,” you seriously need to go on a bigger dose of Ritalin so you could concentrate better!!!
The Republicans are trying to force changes in policy the President and the Senate both oppose, things that have nothing to do with spending. You need 60 votes to get anything through the Senate and 67 votes there to override a veto. That is why this CR is going nowhere and why the Republicans will eventually have to back down.
#5, I never knew Obama had anything against the Coffee Room.
#5: Context matters. The CR is a “distraction” because it’s putting-off dealing with the real budget. The CR is not a good way to manage: it simply buys time. Government cannot run on serial CRs. No large organization can run on a two or three week budget! The President heads the Executive Branch and agencies/departments simply can’t run without a full, proper budget. Mid- to Long-range projects are held-up, strategic planning is in limbo, contracts and grants are back-logged. CRs have real-world consequences.
This story reports: “House Republicans burst into applause at the passage of their one-week government funding measure Thursday afternoon. …The bill … stands zero chance of becoming law ….” Apparently, the House Republicans seem content to applaud their own empty gestures, instead of having a serious discussion about the difficult fiscal and economic issues facing the US government and its people. I remain optimistic that their cheering will be silenced in November 2012, with the re-election of President Obama and the restoration of Democratic control of the House of Representatives.
And No. 7: I agree completely.
