Potholes Make For Tough Winter On NYC Streets

It’s been a rough winter for city streets: More than 117,000 potholes were filled between Jan. 1 and Feb. 23 — 62 percent more than last year.

“DOT has engaged in an all-out war against the pothole,” Deputy Transportation Commissioner David Woloch told the City Council today.

City Hall has allotted an extra $2 million to the street repair budget, which will pay for 30 repair crews to work extended hours and 40 crews to work 10 weekend days through April, the end of pothole-filling season.

Transportation officials hope that’s enough to fix 3,000 to 4.000 potholes a day, up from 2,000 most winters.

Snowstorms and the plowing and salting that followed have led to a 35 percent increase in pothole complaints to 311 — 8,926 calls between Jan. 1 through Feb. 25.

Crews responding to complaints try to fix reported potholes and unreported, smaller potholes nearby.

“We will do all the potholes we encounter. The more minor ones will turn in to major ones,” said Galileo Orlando, deputy DOT commissioner for maintenance.
