NYC Councilman Steve Levin in cooperation with the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg (UJO) hosted a tax assessment seminar in Williamsburg for people to learn about the process of appealing their tax assessment before the March 1st deadline.
Condos traditionally have been home to high income households, however in recent years the fastest growing group of condo owners are low and middle income families. Condo tax assessments though continue to be done at a higher rate establishing those rates on a high income scale.
Presently many families and condo owners in NYC are struggling to pay their mortgage and are forced to decide between adequate food on their table or keeping the roof over their head. A high tax assessment on many of these poor families can be the deciding factor leading to foreclosures and homelessness.
Councilman Levin explained the efforts being taken in the City Council to rectify the issue and ensure fair rates of tax assessments for low and middle income condo owners. A presentation was also given on how condo owners can begin the appeals process.
Rabbi David Niederman President of the UJO said “We are very happy that Councilman Levin organized this seminar educating the community about the tax assessment issue and is fighting in the Council to assist low and middle income families and make sure that their condos are being taxed appropriately.”
