The mastermind of the theft in 2009 of a sign from Auschwitz was handed over to Sweden today to serve his prison sentence, local media reported Monday.
A Polish court in December sentenced Anders Hogstrom, a former Swedish neo-Nazi, to two years and eight months imprisonment for his role in the December 2009 theft of the infamous ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ (work sets you free) sign from above the death camp’s entrance.
Two Polish accomplices were also convicted in connection with the theft and given prison sentences of two-and-a-half years and two years and four months.
The camp, built by the Nazis in 1940 in occupied Poland outside the southern city of Krakow, was the site of the murder of more than 1.1 million people, most of them Jews.
