After Arizona Shooting, Rep. Giffords Astronaut Brother-In-Law Message From ISS

As the nation observed a moment of silence for the 20 people shot in Arizona, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ brother-in-law looked down from space and wondered what mania had been unleashed on Earth.

“As I look out the window, I see a very beautiful planet that seems very inviting and peaceful. Unfortunately, it is not,” International Space Station Commander Scott Kelly said over the radio to Mission Control in Houston.

“These days, we are constantly reminded of the unspeakable acts of violence and damage we can inflict upon one another, not just with our actions, but also with our irresponsible words,” he said.

“We’re better than this. We must do better.”

He called his sister-in-law “a kind, compassionate, brilliant woman, loved by friends and political adversaries alike – a true patriot.”

Kelly’s twin brother, Mark, also a NASA astronaut, is supposed to command what may be the last Shuttle Endeavour flight April 1. His role in that mission is now in doubt.

Flags flew at half-staff at NASA centers nationwide as the agency reeled.

Mark Kelly, who rushed to Tucson from Houston after the shootings Saturday, offered thanks late Sunday for the “unbelievable outpouring of support.”

He thanked the first responders and ordinary people who stepped up in the bloodbath.

“Many stories of heroism are emerging, and they are a source of strength for us during this difficult time. We are forever grateful,” he said in a statement posted on his wife’s congressional website.

“Many of you have offered help. There is little that we can do but pray for those who are struggling.”

He asked that donations be sent to his wife’s pet causes, Tucson’s Community Food Bank and the American Red Cross.
