Sinai Hospital has opened a new kosher pantry, in partnership with Bikur Cholim, on the 1st floor of the hospital. The pantry, located right off the main lobby, is stocked by Bikur Cholim with fresh meals, especially for Shabbos and Yom Tov, and with other conveniences, such as Cholov Yisroel products, all week long. Thank you to the Sinai administration for providing our community with this vital convenience.
The Sinai Main Hospital pantry is the 4th kosher hospital pantry to be opened and maintained by Bikur Cholim within the past year. The University of Maryland Medical Center’s Kosher Hospitality Room opened in November, 2009 and is located on the 6th floor of the Gudelsky Pavilion. This was followed by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Kosher Pantry (Blalock 175), which opened in July, 2010 and the Sinai ER Kosher Pantry in October, 2010.
Sinai Hospital has designed a permanent space, near the new Shabbos entrance, to house a dedicated Bikur Cholim Shabbos Room. This room is expected to be completed in late Summer, 2011. The new Sinai Main Hospital Pantry serves as a temporary measure, to begin providing some of the amenities of a Shabbos room to the community.
Dozens of kosher hospital pantries and Shabbos rooms have been in operation in hospitals throughout the country, from New York City to Aventura, FL and from Cleveland to Durham, NC. They provide free-of charge kosher food for families in the hospital, who are temporarily away from the readily available Jewish staples of their home and neighborhood. “We are thrilled to introduce this service to the Baltimore Jewish community to better serve their needs”, said Aron Katz, President of Bikur Cholim of Baltimore.
