Fluctuating temperatures will not help the Great Blizzard Dig-Out of 2010 in its third day Wednesday, as much of the region struggles just to return to normal.
Despite forecasts of sunny skies for the remainder of the week, inconsistent temperatures will conspire against those of us craving dry, safe sidewalks and streets. Temperatures will be locked in a see-saw of doom at least until Friday, with afternoon thaws giving way to refreezing overnight — a recipe for difficult conditions in the mornings.
These fluctuations will create major snow removal headaches as icy, hardened snow attaches itself to anything and everything underneath: the sidewalk, the road, your car, your dog… anything. The best remedy is to remember to be patient, plan ahead, and take it slow.
More Snow Safety: Be on the lookout for black ice on your morning commute. When walking, remember to take short strides. If you’re forced to walk on the street, be sure to walk against traffic. Take breaks while shoveling snow — and don’t worry if you can’t finish the whole driveway in one outing. Trust us, it isn’t going anywhere.
Post-Blizzard Travel Woes: Delays continued as of Tuesday evening at area airports. LaGuardia was the best off, reporting average delays of around two hours, according to the FAA. Newark airport — in the bulls-eye of the storm — was still suffering from average delays of over eight hours. It’s a miracle any outdoor trains were running at all, with the amount of snow piled on the tracks. And as for city streets, well, when snowplows themselves are getting stuck, its easy to see how big of a mess you’re in.
