Staten Island Commute Time Worst In The Nation

The United States Census Bureau yesterday confirmed something most commuters already knew – four of the city’s five boroughs ranked at the top of the list for the longest commute times to work.

Staten Island was the worst, at an average commute of 42.5 minutes. Queens was just behind at 42 minutes.

Brooklynites averaged 41.6 minutes of commute time, and the Bronx 41.3.

If you want to shorten your commute, you might want to head to King County, Texas. That’s where residents have the quickest trip at just 3.4 minutes.

The figures come from previous censuses and the 2009 American Community Survey, which sampled three-million households.

  1. That depends on where you are commuting to. New York doesn’t have a traditional “downtown”, but rather has many downtowns. Comparing commute times are a classic example of comparing the proverbial “apples and oranges”.

  2. If you’ll notice, the range of commute times in these four boroughs totals 1.2 minutes, so they are pretty much all the same. I’d love to say that we were so careful with our time that it should make a major difference. That is part of the price you pay for living in a big city, unless you want to move out to King County, Texas as the article suggests. Before you pack your bags, balance the time saved on the commute to work with extra travel time for various Jewish services!
