The winter storm that smacked the Chicago area left a bit of snow accumulation, frigid temperatures and flight cancellations in its wake Sunday.

Steady snowfall and powerful wind gusts combined to create “blizzard-like” conditions, forcing nearly 1,700 flight cancellations at Chicago airports.

Most of the snow left downtown Chicago as of 6:15 p.m. and headed east toward northwest Indiana, said National Weather Service meteorologist Richard Castro. What remains will be strong winds and plummeting temperatures overnight, he said.

“What has been impressive has been the winds,” Castro said.

Midway Airport received 2 1/2 inches of snow and O’Hare International Airport got about one inch, according to Castro. Three inches of snow fell in LaSalle County.

Romeoville checked in with 1.2 inches of snow and Rockford residents shoveled 1.9 inches, said weather service meteorologist Bill Wilson.

While temperatures remained in the low 30s most of the day, the wind chill and strong winds helped bring the temperature down. At 6:15 p.m., the temperature was 21 degrees but with the wind chill it was about 2 degrees, Castro said.

Temperatures are expected to drop dramatically overnight, Castro said, with lows in the upper single digits in Chicago and about 5 degrees outside the city. With wind chills, temperatures are expected to hit below zero. Average winds will be 31 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph, he said.

According to the city Department of Aviation, as of 8:45 p.m. approximately 1,375 flights have been canceled at O’Hare International Airport, which is experiencing flight delays of 45 minutes or more, and more than 300 have been canceled at Midway, which is experiencing delays of up to 2 hours. The agency warned that more cancellations are expected and said that checking with airlines on flight status is especially important today.

Airlines have asked the Department of Aviation to initiate its Passenger Assistance Program, which consists of providing cots, blankets and amenity kits to travelers, as well as asking some concessions to remain open later to accommodate those travelers. The cots are set up past security checkpoints and more than 200 cots have been requested so far. 

The weather service cancelled its winter storm warning for northeastern and parts of central Illinois and southeast Wisconsin, but it still remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for northwest Indiana.

In the warning’s place is a winter weather advisory that is in effect until midnight.

Parts of northwest Indiana could see 8 inches or more of snow.
