The city is getting its sixth area code.

Beginning April 16, many new outer-borough phone numbers will be assigned area code 929, adding to the city’s existing 212, 917, 646, 718 and 347 codes.

More than 7 million 929 numbers will go to landlines and cellphones.

The move comes with outer-borough 718 and 347 numbers likely to be used up by next fall.

Nationally, the number rush peaked in 2006, tapered off with the economic downturn and picked up again this year.
