NYS Assembly Is Still Silver’s Turf

Albany, NY – All that post-election talk about a possible uprising against Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver apparently didn’t’ get through to Assembly Democrats. They voted overwhelmingly today to back Silver for another term as speaker.

“It was big,” Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan (D-Queens) said of the vote for Silver, which took place in a closed-door meeting of Assembly Democrats. Silver’s election was not challenged by any other Democrat, she added.

The vote of the Democratic conference effectively clears the way for Silver to be formally elected speaker when the Legislature re-convenes in January. He was first elected speaker in 1994.

Also yesterday, Senate Republicans unanimously re-elected Sen, Dean Skelos of Nassau County to be the Senate’s GOP leader. Should the Republicans re-take control of the chamber – which appears increasingly likely – Skelos would serve as Senate president.

Senate Democrats this evening re-elected Brooklyn Sen. John Sampson their leader for the coming term. Sources said Sampson was re-elected without any opposition from the conference.

  1. Given the way New York State has been run for the last 20 years, and the serious fiscal problems it faces, maybe it would have been a better thing if an anti-Semitic goy was the Speaker. It’s nice have someone frum in high office, but not if he totally screws up.
