Obama to Announce Pay Freeze for Federal Workers

Bowing to Republican political pressure and growing budget concerns, President Obama will announce a two-year pay freeze for civilian federal workers Monday, according to administration sources.

The freeze applies to all federal employees — including civilian employees of the Defense Department, and will not impact step increases or bonuses for federal workers, according to sources.

Further details will be announced by Obama at 11:35 a.m., the White House said.

  1. Yes I agree with you number 1 and how about putting Air Force 1,2, and 3 in moth balls for the next 2 years. Enough with his traveling. Stay in Washington

  2. Didn’t the democrats get all bent out of shape when the republicans attempt this?

What I would like to see is a hiring freeze and a paycut. That would make more sense.

  3. 1. Lower wages reduce the need for layoffs (either as RIFs – meaning permanent, or Furloughs – which are temporary). They also don’t affect promotions or incentive awards.

    2. #1- The salaries of the President and Vice-President can’t be changed mid-term. It’s in the constitution.

  4. Really number 5 Average public sector is $75,000 and private $42000 so how do you say that. What about facturing in the retirement and benefit package and tell me it lags behind. It show does not lag behind the unemployed or underemployed

  5. #5 – Given the huge number of applicants per job, it appears that civil services is overpaid. If it were underpaid, the goverment would have have trouble recruiting employees, which is rarely the case. Based on standard economic theory, any job that gets vastly more applicants than openings, is probably overpaid.
