Governor David Paterson is expected to announce a deal later today to bring an Indian-owned casino to the Catskills.
Approving construction in Sullivan County would satisfy a land-claim settlement with the Stockbridge-Munsee band of Mohicans from Wisconsin.
Advocates say the casino would bring much-needed jobs to the area and hundreds of millions of dollars a year to the state. But other Indian nations have protested the project, saying the profits will be sent back to Wisconsin.
The deal still has to be considered by the Department of the Interior.
It’s also expected to face legal challenges from environmental groups.
