The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the subway’s signal system is safe, despite allegations that workers faked inspections of hundreds of signals.
The New York Post first reported Friday that city transit supervisors forced signal inspectors to lie about checking hundreds of signals they never really inspected.
In a statement, the MTA says an internal investigation discovered “deficiencies” in the performance of signal system inspections.
The agency says after the investigation it “changed the leadership of the signals division.”
Straphangers were outraged to hear of the report.
“You’re going to have another accident that kills a bunch of people. And when they find out you didn’t do what you were supposed to do, then you’re really going to have some issues. Really going to have even more upset people,” said a rider.
“When you’re asking for bailouts, how much money were they getting for advertisements? And they would never show the books on those numbers, either. So they have a habit about fudging numbers and withholding information,” said another rider.
MTA officials say they took swift action to make sure the subway signals are safe, and that a fail-safe system is in place to stop a train if a signal fails.
The MTA Inspector General’s office is conducting a parallel investigation, according to transit officials.
