New York Sen. Chuck Schumer has been tapped for a new leadership job in charge of “policy, press and politics” for the US Senate’s Democratic Conference, officials said last night.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid yesterday sent conference members a letter announcing his choice of Schumer to head up the new committee. He said he picked Schumer because of his “communication abilities and tactical skills.”

Schumer will continue to serve in the No. 3 leadership spot as vice chairman of the conference, in addition to his new duties.
