The trial of self-proclaimed September 11th mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will reportedly not be happening anytime soon, if at all.
A Washington Post report published Saturday says President Barack Obama’s administration is backing off from plans to hold a federal trial for Mohammed in the United States, and might hold him in military custody indefinitely.
The paper says Obama officials do not believe they can try Mohammed in federal court because of strong opposition from lawmakers in New York and Washington.
It also says there is little support within the White House for a military trial at Guantanamo Bay.
Senior officials tell the paper they have not ruled out a federal prosecution of Mohammed, but any trial likely would not happen before the next presidential election in 2012.
Attorney General Eric Holder announced last year that the U.S. Justice Department would try Mohammed in Lower Manhattan, but his decision was roundly criticized by city and state lawmakers over the cost and security issues associated with such a trial.
