Hundreds of students protested at Tel Aviv University on Thursday against a bill granting yeshiva students millions in state funds. The students attempted to block a major junction outside the university’s main gate.
The protest lasted around an hour, during which signs were held up saying: “Sorry no more of us could come, but we work”.
The chairman of Tel Aviv’s student union, Ran Livne, said, “Benjamin Netanyahu, enough of your illusions. It would be preferable that instead of making declarations on equality, you would call a press conference and say out loud what everyone knows: That you prefer to fund yeshiva students in order to maintain the coalition, instead of investing in the generation of the future.”
Filmmaker and journalist Guy Meroz also spoke at the rally, saying, “The government must understand that if there is no equality in education then there will be no security. Education towards ignorance and illiteracy will destroy the system we have built here.”
The students say this is not the end. Another rally is planned for next week, at the Israeli Opera House in Tel Aviv, to which students from all over Israel have been invited.
The protests began around two weeks ago, the largest so far having taken place in Jerusalem with around 10,000 participants calling out, “Haredim go work”.
