Yesterday, Hatzolah accepted delivery of the first Lucas Thumper to a Volunteer Squad in the State of New Jersey. The Thumper, is a $15,000 device designed to deliver consistent CPR chest compressions without the off intervals, and to deliver direct current cardioversion during chest compressions, and is recommended by the American Heart Association.
Another advantage of the device is, that it reduces the impact of extenuating circumstances on the interruption and quality of chest compressions, such as transport conditions, rescuer fatigue and rescuer experience level.
“We’re very excited about this new machine”, says a Hatzolah member. “It will make our job much easier, should we need to use it”.
Yesterday evening, Hatzolah members gathered at the Heathwood Garage to get a hands-on training on the device by a company instructor.
Although new to Lakewood and to NJ, several Hatzolah squads in NY have already purchased the device, including Hatzolah of Boro Park who currently owns one such device, Hatzolah of Williamsburg owns two, and Hatzolah of Queens owns seven such devices.

I was trained on the Thumper years ago when I first became an EMT. It only saves the rescuers work, if a person is brought into the hospital on the Thumper the mortality is like 95%. Honestly? It’s a waste of money. Put more paramedics on the streets or buy more defibrillators.
