Brooklyn, NY – “Today’s City Council approval of the Culver El project marks the end of a 5-year long effort to make this desperately needed affordable housing project a reality. Low and middle income families across this City desperately need safe, affordable housing options. Boro Park, in particular, has a significant need for affordable housing. The 68 units planned for Culver Estates will be part of the first affordable housing project in the area in over a decade and will, hopefully, usher in a new era of long-term investment in expanding affordable housing options throughout Boro Park.
I would like to thank my colleague Brad Lander for seeing the approval process through its final stages. I look forward to collaborating with him, as well as my colleague Sara Gonzalez, on future affordable housing projects in Boro Park. I would also like to thank Councilman Lander’s predecessor, now-Public Advocate, Bill de Blasio for his efforts, as well as former HPD Commissioner, and now-US Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Shaun Donovan for his leadership. Most importantly, I thank my predecessor, now-Deputy Comptroller, Simcha Felder for envisioning this project, negotiating it at the critical stages and working for years to ensure its completion. It was my privilege to complete the final portion of Simcha’s work and I look forward to SBCO immediately breaking ground on this critical project.”
