Yahoo is rolling out a new search experience today, making its web search more streamlined and visual, improving its mobile search and adding a list of hot search topics to the Yahoo front page.
Now, when you search for entertainment or news-related topics, instead of a long list of results you’ll get a box with vertical tabs, which give you several different ways to examine the topic.
The changes make Yahoo search quite different from Microsoft’s Bing, although both are based on the same technology. Yahoo obviously wants to make its search more streamlined and give it a curated look, instead of letting the user picking from a long list of links.
Besides making the search results easier to navigate, Yahoo also tries to help the users decide what to search. Type in the name of a musician into Yahoo’s search, and Yahoo will offer you a couple of related names to try out on top of the search result box.
Furthermore, the upper right side of Yahoo’s homepage now features a list of trending topics — clicking on one of these will take you to the search results for that particular topic.
Finally, Yahoo has also improved web search for mobile devices using HTML5 technology; for example, searching for a stock quote will bring you its current price and related news first, followed by a list of standard search results. You can try it out by visiting m.yahoo.com on your mobile web browser.
