Israeli Police have arrested 400 passengers returning to Israel from Uman, Ukraine. Of them, 91 are suspected of evading mandatory army service and others of debt-related offenses.
Two days ago, on another flight from Uman, two people were arrested for attacking flight attendants who refused to serve them alcohol.
This year more than 25,000 people travelled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah from around the globe.

Sounds more like their names were on the equivalent of “outstanding warrants” that triggered something as they passed through a border crossing – not a “raid” which implies something more sinister.
YNET is an ultra-secular source whose biases, and knowledge of English, leave much to be desired.
What were the 309 others arrested for?
Beware when entering Israel your passport, visa, ID shows up on the Israel Intelligence Site with lots of info.. much can be negative, sinister and cause for questioning.
akuperma is correct. If you are trying to lay low (for whatever reason) it’s not the best idea to get on a plane.
Sounds to me like the police used their seichel, unlike the travelers who think they are above the law!
This was definitely not a Kodak moment for Breslav chassidus. Probably the most egregious act of all was attacking flight attendants for refusing to serve two of them alcohol. It’s Asseres Y’mei Hatshuva, gents, not Shushan Purim. I can deal with Israeli draft dodgers, and even to some degree with white collar criminals, but not violent boors.
Why am I not surprised after hearing what really went on in Uman. I wonder how much davening actually occurred? How many people actually went to daven by the kever, and how many went to have a good time and get away. Unfortunately, the number is likely very high. And it makes me even sicker when I hear that they leave their families behind while they go out partying….
Locknload, really you can deal with draft dodgers? That’s so interesting, you can deal with people who break the law! I guess you can probably also deal with stealing and murdering too!
Don’t understand; they are scanned before they leave why only now do they arrest them
#7 kfb, your comment is too much and just too stupid. Locknload is saying that if someone is trying to dodge the draft he can UNDERSTAND them. He didn’t say he CONDONES their action; all he said was that he can UNDERSTAND their desire to get out of it. To be a bunch of animals he can’t deal with, and you went ahead and wrote a stupid remark, saying that he can probably deal with murderers, too. I don’t know who you are but PLEASE think before you make remarks because this one makes ZERO sense.
i cant understand why everyone is so negative towards the uman ‘pilgrims’
anyone remember what happened during the latest fifa world cup in south africa, tens of thousands came from uk to south africa, you would love to know what went on the there! fights, drunken bawls hundreds deported.
lehavdil, 30/40000 frumers to uman and only TWO ‘violent’ incidents.
mi keamcha yisroel.
i am relly proad to be jewish
No wonder my children call Breslover Chasidim “harryishe druggies”. Now I know why!
The revised version is that the numbers were 160 people, not as a result of a “raid” but as they were leaving the country, with most for military offenses (probably yeshiva students who didn’t do the right paperwork for an exemption) or from the “Executions office” (they had judgements pending against them). This comes to under 1% of the people who made the trip.
The revised article said that two drunks were arrested on a return flight (after the flight crew filed a complaint).
duvidl – most of those who leave their families are serious chassidim and spend the time davening and getting nisoreir. The ahngers-on and wackos are the ones who go for a good time.
YITZCHOK -because there is a process, you cant just go around arresting people.
I think this Uman business should be discontinued, I highly doubt this is what R’ Nachman had in mind (esp. on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur) and it is definitely not doing anything for his memory.
Yitzchoky, that’s nice of them that they let them fly and they took care of business later…. No?
kfb: the Ran in Nedorim 28a clearly writes that there’s no dina d’malchusa dina in Eretz Yisroel
Mr. kitzur, would you have said the same to the “zionists” who got arrested blowing a SHOFAR pre-state??
There is no reason why these ppl couldn’t have made sure that they had the proper exemptions for their own good. It’s called sechel.
Halacha won’t help you if you are sitting in jail!
FYI the draft laws in Israel are very strict. Once a boy who is in yeshiva (and applies for a deferment), turns 16, he is not allowed to work or leave the country!! NO EXCEPTIONS! This included me an American who’s family made aliya. When my family went in to the US for Pesach I WAS NOT ABLE TO JOIN THEM. Does that make sense?
#13: The unfortunate truth is actually that the majority are the crazies and drunks, while only a third or so are serious Yidden who mean it seriously.
